The first settlement of Minnetonka was established along the Minnehaha Creek, during the 1880s. The first people to settle in this area were Dakota and Ojibwe Indians. It was believed by them that the land around the Lake Minnetonka was a legendary home of a non-existent race. An agreement was signed by the Indian tribes during the year 1851, which allows the settlement of the lands in the west of Fort Snelling.
